A couple of weeks ago, after ordering a new bike I put my old one up for sale. Having paid £3,795 back in 2021. Being realistic and just wanting to get a bit back to put towards the new one I put it up on Facebook marketplace..
Following a last ride on it, I decided I wasn't happy with a sound so put it in the local shop for a quick part replacement. Quoted £80 for it, it was small change compared to the price I was selling for.
A little while passed when I got a message on Facebook enquiring about it. They seemed keen and wanted to view it that day. As the bike was in the shop still I said I would meet them there.
An hour later, I walked up the shop and got a message to say the buyer was outside, so I said come in to the store. After coming in, we chatted for a bit, he took a phone call about dinner, then we got down to business.
Happy with everything all that was needed was a test ride. The dreaded moment always. Leaving his jacket, bag and phone on the side we went out side. He got on and... Well, that's the last time I saw him. I won't go into detail but I wasn't getting caught up fighting someone over a bike. He had made his intentions clear.
I went back to the shop, explained what happened, and walked home with my tail between my legs.
I reported it online to the police, and informed the home insurance of what had happened.
A couple of weeks have passed now, and the police are still looking into it, the insurance have made their decision, and I have been into the police station to give my statement. I did take the bag and phone in with me but was told it was of no use due to the chain of custody.
So, the outcome... The police have NOT just closed the case and have even been to collect CCTV. Much to my surprise the insurance have actually agreed a settlement on it, and it turns out I have a new Samsung Galaxy phone.
Given the bike was £3,795 new, was 4 years old, and up for sale for £1,500 at the time of the robbery, I was pleased with the settlement of £4,000.
Additionally after a quick hard reset, I now have a nice working Samsung Galaxy phone too..
How's that for a turn up for the books!
